Week Ten

Things that have been fucking me insane this week.

Well, actually this is more last week, I thought I'd let the first few days of week eleven spill over into this update.

The Shit-Top: It finally packed in on tuesday taking my 1,300 words for one of my essays with it. That's 1,300 words of what would have been a 2,000 word essay. That was on tuesday, TWO 2,000 word essays were to be handed in on friday and I had three days to sort something out. The essays got done, but they weren't very good and I spent most of the week in torment in the library.

The network: I taken it upon myself to be responsible for the home network at my house in Leeds. The network itself went okay, 15 metre cables now litter the house and there's been at least one fairly substantial game of counter-strike (1.5 of course).

Fear the power of Mark History's Pentium II with 96mb of RAM

I bet you're wondering how the network has crept into the 'fucked insane' category of things right? Well this network had the purpose of sharing the internet connection from Bulldog Shitdog which was connected last week. This didn't happen. For I couldn't get the D-Link Modem to talk to the Linksys Router. Stewart entered into the network nightmare too but even with the power of tech forums we couldn't share the connection between all the computers via the router. This made my network into a rather expensive failure. I walk around the house and the stench of failure is everywhere, the black patch cables take the failure into every single room in the house bar the two bath/shower rooms. So that makes the modem £40 of useless technology draining money from my battered account that is supposed to be going towards the rent I can't afford in December.

The horror of all the cables

Parklane: On 22nd December, Parklane will be wishing me a merry christmas with a £900 rent payment. That isn't going to happen until well into January, there is no money, there is no student account (thanks Halifax), there is going to be calls to and from Bono Donna from Parklane and negotiations about standing order payments.

CCL Computers: The D-Link modem needs returning, trouble is it's been opened, used and isn't compatible with my network. Trying to explain to the returns guy over the phone that "the modem works fine, but not when I plug it into the router" and desperately throwing in IP addresses so as not to convey a complete ignorance to the dark art of networking is well- not very pleasurable.

The rubbish modem we got free from Bulldog

Linksys: Their stuff doesn't work! Despite having a Linksys Router AND Modem, we are still unable to share the internet across Carlnet. Not even with the combined powers of Stewart, Stewart's Friend (Johnny?) and me could we get it working, though Stewart's Friend (I'm pretty sure it's Johnny or Jonathon or something) DID manage to get it so we could view the diagnostic menus on the router and the modem with them both plugged in.

I was hoping to breed a router that works

Extar, over, out.

TCP/IP, it's fucking me off. Other protocols doing little more. Definitely got worse. Now making me curse. Removing IPX. Will it ever work? Never!
