I really like the How To Destroy Angels EP and I've been thinking about doing a cover of this for a while. It turned out to be a pretty straight cover of the original.

There's a whole load of layered vocals going on. Every time I get to adding vocals to a song I always seem to go overboard on multiple takes and this one was no exception. The part of the vocals which actually took the most getting right was the 'Listen to the sound of my big, black boots' line where everything cuts out but the drums and the clean vocals.

I had a hard time giving the guitar anything useful to do in this. I actually taken out a guitar part quite late in the recording process, which isn't what happens usually.

Adding synth parts wasn't a massive headache as it usually is. Usually the presets on the Micro Korg are utterly useless and I have to dive into MIDI nonsense and lose all interest in doing anything. Synth explorations have scuppered more than one recording so it was nice this time for it to be easy.

The song is probably *more* industrial than the original. I've been listening a lot to old Ministry and Skinny Puppy lately. I don't particularly think that had a massive influence though, the whole 'industrial' thing is a direction I've been going in since deciding it was the only way I could produce stuff that didn't sound like I *really* needed a drummer friend.

The samples at the end are 'This was to control...' and 'A life of perpetual fear and tension.' which are clips from an Eisenhower speech about the Cold War.

I can't really think of anything else approaching proper 'trivia' for this song.
